Introduction
We’re comparing the New Audi Q2 with the Audi A3 Sportback. Engine wise we will compare the 1.4 150PS petrol ‘S tronic’ variant in the popular ‘S line’ trim. The comparison uses price and specification data as per 17th August 2016.
Vehicle Comparison
The Audi Q2 is classified a crossover and is a similar size to the A3 – however the Q2 is slightly less long and a bit taller. It’s likely that people who already own an A3 and are looking for a new car may well consider the Q2. Both cars utilise the VAG ‘MQB’ platform and several of the underpinnings (including key things such as engines) are the same. We are looking at the ‘S line’ trim on both cars.
Price Comparison
The Q2 with this specification has a base price of £28,280 and the A3 is very close at £27,935. So the Q2 looks like it is a bit more expensive as standard, but equipment levels differ, so we need to make these as close as we can for a fair comparison.
To keep the comparison as close as possible, we have gone for ‘Glacier white’ metallic paint on both cars. In ‘S line’ trim level, both cars come with 18″ wheels, LED headlights and ‘S line’ styling pack and steering wheel.
Equipment wise, there are some differences and the table below details these.
Audi Q2 | Audi A3 | |
---|---|---|
Base price | £28,280 | £27,935 |
Space saver spare wheel | £100 | Standard |
Flat-bottomed steering wheel | £150 | Standard |
Dual-zone electronic climate control | £525 | Standard |
Driver's Information System - Colour | £150 | Standard |
Cruise control | £375 (adaptive cruise control) | Standard |
Pre sense Front with pedestrian recognition | Standard | £200 |
Progressive steering | Standard | £295 |
So the Q2 comes out at a total of £29,580 and A3 at £28,430 for as close as possible match equipment wise. One particular surprise is the fact the Q2 doesn’t come with climate control as standard – on a car almost costing £30K, you’d expect this really! The Q2 does have slightly better cruise control as adaptive is the only option, vs. standard cruise control on the A3.
There are a number of other minor differences between the two cars, which are not available as options.
So in summary the Q2 costs £1,150 more than the A3 for a similar specification of car.
Therefore the conclusion is that for the 1.4 150PS Petrol ‘S tronic’ variant in ‘S line’ trim, the Audi Q2 is comparatively more expensive than the Audi A3.
NOTE: This comparison is based on prices as of 17th August 2016, with the equipment comparison done as accurately as possible. Price differences for other engine and trim combinations may differ.
