We’re comparing two electric cars – Volkswagen ID4 with the Audi Q4.
Vehicle Size Comparison
Both cars are classed as compact SUVs and claim to have interior space to match that of larger SUVs. The dimensions of both cars are:
- VW ID dimensions = 4.58m length x 1.85 width x 1.64m height. (Wheelbase = 2.77m)
- Audi Q4 dimensions = 4.59m length x 1.87 width x 1.63m height. (Wheelbase = 2.77m)
So both cars are extremely similar in dimensions – the Audi is just a few cm larger.
To have a comparable base-line, we are looking ‘Family’ trim on the VW and the ‘S line’ trim on the Audi. The VW comes with the 77kWh battery and 204PS. Audi allow a choice of motors, so we will choose the 77kWh battery and 204PS one to match the VW. The base price of the VW ID4 Family is £45,520 and the Audi Q4 S line e-tron 40 is £46,375.
To keep the comparison as close as possible we will go with the popular white metallic paint, which is £635 extra for the ID4 and £575 for the Q4.
The VW comes with 19″ wheels as standard, whilst the Audi has 20″. So we will upgrade the VW wheels, which costs £490 extra.
Equipment wise, there are some differences and the table below details these.
|VW ID4 Family||Audi Q4 S line e-tron 40|

The VW ID4 comes out at a total of £46,645 and the Audi Q4 at £49,420 for as close as possible match equipment wise. It should be noted that there are several equipment differences that are not possible to match since options are not available – particularly options from the VW, meaning the Audi has a fair bit more. It should also be noted that the Audi has higher quality interior materials, plus has more physical buttons.
Therefore the conclusion is that the VW ID4 Family is comparatively slightly cheaper than the Audi Q4 S line e-tron 40.
The WLTP range of the VW ID4 Family is 318 miles, whilst the Audi Q4 S line e-tron 40 is 308 miles. So the ID4 is slightly more efficient.
